The $40 Tracker You Can Plug In Today and Hardwire Into a Kill Switch Later

Most GPS trackers force a choice up front: buy a simple OBD-II plug-in for casual tracking, or commit to a hardwired install for a kill switch. MooveTrax's KS tier skips that choice -- it's one $40 device that works as a plug-in tracker today and becomes a kill switch later, when an installer hardwires it in.

The usual tradeoff

See the full hardwired vs. OBD vs. battery breakdown for the general case, but the short version: OBD-II plug-ins are fast and reversible -- no installer, no wiring, unplug it anytime -- but anyone can unplug it just as easily, including a renter who doesn't want to be tracked. Hardwired devices are tamper-resistant and can carry a real kill switch, but they require a professional install before you get any benefit at all.

Most hosts end up picking one and living with its limits. KS is built around not having to.

Stage 1: plug it in

Push the KS unit into the OBD-II port -- under the dash on nearly every car built since 1996 -- and it's reporting within about 30 seconds. No tools, no installer, no commitment. In this configuration you get:

  • GPS tracking at a 1-minute interval
  • Trip history and geofencing
  • Speed, over-mileage, and late-return alerts
  • Tamper alerts if the device is removed

What you don't get yet: a kill switch. Plugged in, KS is a tracker, not an immobilizer -- be precise about that when you're deciding whether it's enough on its own.

Stage 2: hardwire it, whenever you're ready

When you decide you want the kill switch -- after a close call, before a high-value booking, or just from the start if you already know you will -- the same physical device gets wired into the vehicle's starter circuit by an installer. That unlocks:

  • A real kill switch, with a relay built into the device (no separate relay to source)
  • Remote ignition disable
  • Automations like auto-engaging the kill switch when the vehicle is locked, or if the device itself is removed

Nothing about the tracking side changes -- you're not replacing the device, just unlocking what it can do once it's wired in instead of plugged in.

Why this beats buying twice

The alternative is buying a cheap plug-in tracker now and a separate hardwired kill switch later -- two purchases, two devices to manage, and the second one often costs more than the first because kill-switch hardware typically isn't sold as a $40 impulse buy. One KS unit covers both stages for one $40 payment plus the $12.50/month subscription either way.

Where this actually matters

New hosts often aren't sure yet whether they need a kill switch -- it depends on the car's value, the neighborhood, how the listing performs, whether a scare ever happens. KS lets that decision wait. Install it day one for tracking, and treat hardwiring as a separate decision you make later with real data, not a guess you're locked into before your first trip.
