Off-Trip Insurance for Turo Hosts: Every Real Provider, Compared

Off-Trip Insurance for Turo Hosts: Every Real Provider, Compared

Turo's own protection plan covers a vehicle during active trips -- not the time in between. That gap is what off-trip insurance exists to fill. Here are the real providers, what they actually cover, and the GPS requirement most of them share. MooveTrax is hardware, not insurance -- but two of the insurers below name MooveTrax on their own approved-device lists, which is why we keep getting asked about this.

What off-trip insurance actually covers

These policies cover the vehicle for business use between Turo trips -- delivering it, washing it, taking it to a mechanic -- not personal errands. How much personal use is allowed varies by provider: Tint allows none, INSHUR allows up to 125 miles/month, Addify allows up to 300 business miles/month only. None of these replace coverage during an active trip -- that's Turo's own plan.

Tint -- Turo's embedded option

Tint is built directly into the Turo host portal, available in 48 states (not New York or Kentucky), with a 3-vehicle minimum. It offers a telematics plan and a non-telematics plan: choose telematics and you have 60 days to connect an approved GPS provider and consent to share data, or Tint moves you to the non-telematics plan at a higher rate. MooveTrax is on Tint's published approved-device list. Pricing is quote-based through the Turo host portal.

INSHUR -- the former ABI "Period X" product

INSHUR acquired American Business Insurance Services in April 2023, and ABI's carshare product transitioned to INSHUR -- which is why you'll see both names referenced. Available in 26 states, no fleet minimum (discounts kick in at 4+ and 10+ vehicles), up to 125 personal miles/month included. Unlike Tint, GPS is mandatory, not optional -- an approved device must be installed within 60 days of the policy starting. MooveTrax is on INSHUR's published approved-device list.

Addify -- the budget option in 15 states

Addify's Off Rent Program starts around $87/vehicle/month, covering up to 300 business miles. Available in 15 states as of mid-2026, with more listed as "coming soon." Vehicle eligibility rules apply (under 15 years old, under 130,000 miles, no salvage title, under $75,000 value). No published GPS requirement.

Roamly -- for hosts going beyond Turo

Roamly covers carshare hosts and, through Roamly PX, direct and private rentals outside any platform -- relevant if you're exploring what's covered in our private rental tech stack guide. State availability and any telematics requirement are quote-based, not publicly listed.

OffTrip -- the new entrant

A newer product aimed specifically at off-trip coverage with no fleet minimum and a "loss-free host credit" concept. Underwriter and state footprint aren't public yet -- worth watching, not yet comparable to the established options above.

Why almost every off-trip policy wants a GPS tracker

For off-trip carshare insurance specifically, GPS isn't a discount lever the way driver-behavior telematics works for commercial auto (Progressive, Nationwide, and Travelers all publish behavior-based discount programs, but those score braking and speeding, and location-only tracking doesn't qualify for them). Here, GPS is simpler: it's a coverage condition for INSHUR, or the qualifier for Tint's cheaper plan tier. One device that's on both insurers' approved lists covers either path -- see the full ABI/INSHUR/Tint compliance guide.

Why New York and Kentucky are different

Both states have their own peer-to-peer car sharing insurance statutes, which is why Tint and some other providers exclude them from the standard product. Hosts in NY or KY generally need to work with a commercial insurance agent directly rather than a standard off-trip product.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip the GPS tracker and still get off-trip insurance?

Depends on the insurer. Tint lets you skip it, but moves you to a non-telematics plan at a higher rate. INSHUR requires an approved GPS device within 60 days of your policy starting -- there's no non-telematics option.

Do I still need my personal auto policy if I buy off-trip insurance?

Yes. Off-trip insurance covers the vehicle between Turo trips for business use; it doesn't replace your personal policy for personal driving, and platforms generally still require you to maintain one.

Is MooveTrax an insurance product?

No. MooveTrax is GPS tracking and vehicle security hardware. It appears on Tint's and INSHUR's published approved-device lists because those insurers require or incentivize telematics -- MooveTrax satisfies that requirement, it doesn't sell the coverage.

Why isn't off-trip insurance available in New York?

New York (and Kentucky) have their own peer-to-peer car sharing insurance statutes, which is why several off-trip providers, including Tint, exclude those states from their standard product. NY/KY hosts generally need to talk to a commercial insurance agent directly.
