Turn Any Car Into a Phone Key Car — Plus Passive Killswitch Protection Built for High-Theft Cities
In cities like Toronto and Montreal, car theft remains a stubborn reality. Even as overall numbers have eased from their peak, organized rings still target vehicles aggressively, recovery rates stay low, and insurance costs stay high. Traditional keys and factory immobilizers are no longer enough when thieves can grab a key fob, use relay attacks, or exploit known vulnerabilities on certain models.
MooveTrax changes that equation. The system lets you turn almost any car into a true phone-key vehicle while adding a powerful passive killswitch that works automatically when you walk away. Although the product was originally designed for rental and fleet operators, it is equally well suited for daily personal use by individual car owners in high-theft areas.
Your Phone Becomes the Key
MooveTrax’s Smartphone Passive Keyless Entry (PhoneKey / Bluetooth proximity) is simple and app-free for daily use. You pair your phone’s existing Bluetooth with the MooveTrax device once. After that:
- Walk up to the car with your phone in your pocket or bag → the doors automatically unlock and the killswitch disengages.
- Walk away → the car automatically locks and the killswitch engages.
No buttons to press. No app to open every time.
How the proximity system works The device installed in the car advertises via Bluetooth. Your phone connects to it, and the car-side unit continuously measures signal strength. When the signal grows stronger (you are approaching), the car unlocks and unkills. When the signal weakens (you are leaving), it locks and engages the killswitch. Detection of arrival or departure typically takes about 2 seconds.
Bluetooth range is configurable You can adjust the proximity distance so the system triggers at the range that best suits your parking situation and preferences.
Lock timing The vehicle locks immediately once the system detects that the authorized phone has left the configured range. There is no fixed delay.
Multiple passive users Unlimited phones (or other Bluetooth devices) can be authorized at the same time. Two (or more) family members can each have their own phone paired for simultaneous passive proximity access. The first authorized device that comes into range will connect and control the lock/killswitch state.
No separate Bluetooth app required The proximity feature works with the Bluetooth already built into your device. There is no need to download or keep a special Bluetooth app running in the background.
Works without cellular service Bluetooth proximity operates locally between your phone and the car. It continues to function even when there is no cellular coverage.
Works on virtually any Bluetooth device The system has no operating-system limitation. It supports any Bluetooth device that can be paired — modern iPhones and Android phones, older phones (including classic Nokias), tablets, and even PCs. Background Bluetooth behaviour differences between iOS and Android do not affect basic pairing and proximity operation.
Important limitation If your phone battery dies or Bluetooth is turned off, the passive PhoneKey and automatic lock/killswitch feature will not work until Bluetooth is available again. (You can still use the remote lock/unlock and kill/unkill commands through the MooveTrax web portal or app when cellular service is available.)
Passive Killswitch: The Real Theft Deterrent
The standout security feature is the passive killswitch that pairs with the phone key. When your phone leaves Bluetooth range, the system not only locks the doors but also automatically arms the killswitch. When you return and the phone reconnects, the killswitch automatically disarms.
Even if a thief has the physical key, a copied key, or forces entry, the car simply will not start. This is especially valuable in high-theft markets such as Toronto/GTA and Montreal, where organized export rings move vehicles quickly and recovery rates remain low.
Because the killswitch activates automatically when you leave the vehicle, you do not have to remember to arm anything. Leave the key on the seat if you want — the car still will not go anywhere without an authorized paired device nearby (or a remote unkill command).
Additional layers include:
- Shock sensor (Version 3) for attempted break-ins
- Hood-open detection
- Automatic killswitch engagement if the device itself is removed
- Real-time GPS tracking, unlimited geofences, speed alerts, and remote kill/unkill from anywhere with cellular coverage
Built by a Rental Operator, Useful for Everyday Drivers
MooveTrax was designed by a car-rental owner who needed reliable contactless automation for Turo, private rentals, and fleet use. The same hardware that gives renters temporary phone access also gives private owners modern phone-key convenience and strong anti-theft protection on older or non-connected cars.
Key practical points:
- Hardwired installation (any competent car-alarm or remote-start shop can do it)
- Works on a wide range of vehicles
- No constant app dependency for the proximity features
- Monthly service keeps tracking, commands, and cloud features active
- Compatible with insurance requirements commonly needed by rental platforms
In markets where vehicles can disappear overnight, passive protection that does not rely on you remembering to do anything extra is a meaningful upgrade. Pairing your phone (or any Bluetooth device) once turns everyday ownership into a more convenient, more secure experience — and gives thieves a much harder target.
