The Kill Switch That Arms Itself Every Night
Most overnight car theft defenses only work if you remember to use them -- park under a light, use a steering wheel lock, bring the fob inside. MooveTrax's kill switch can run on a schedule instead: disabled automatically every night, re-enabled automatically every morning. No app opened, no habit required, and nothing for a tired owner to forget.
The problem with relying on yourself
A kill switch only stops a theft if it's actually engaged at the moment someone tries to start the car. If that depends on you remembering to arm it every night -- after a long day, a late flight, a few drinks -- it's going to fail exactly when it matters most. Most car security still assumes a human will reliably do the right thing every single night, forever. That's not a security plan; that's a hope.
How the scheduler actually works
MooveTrax includes a scheduler/timer, confirmed directly in our own FAQ: it can prevent the vehicle from starting during set hours and automatically re-enable it later. Set it once -- say, midnight to 6 a.m. -- and the car's starter circuit is disabled every night in that window, without you touching your phone. In the morning, it re-enables itself on schedule, ready to go.
This runs through the same hardwired, Normally Closed kill switch used across MooveTrax's tamper-resistant design -- the scheduler decides when the circuit is held open, but the tamper resistance itself doesn't change. See why NC wiring means removing the device doesn't restore drivability, scheduled or not.
The scheduler is available on the MT3V, KS, and WATER tiers -- the three tiers with a physical kill switch for it to control. It's not a separate purchase or a paid add-on; it's part of the platform. The $0 Tesla and OEM software-only tiers don't include a kill switch, so there's no starter circuit to schedule.
Two different automatic triggers, not one
It's worth being precise here, because MooveTrax actually has two distinct ways to arm the kill switch automatically, and they solve different problems:
| Scheduled kill switch | Walkaway kill switch | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Time of day | Phone proximity |
| Best for | Overnight theft, parked at home/work | Any time you step away from the car |
| Tiers | MT3V, KS, WATER | MT3V only |
| Requires a paired phone nearby? | No | Yes |
You don't have to choose only one -- on the MT3V tier, both run at the same time: the car disables itself the moment you walk away, and separately, it's disabled every night on your schedule regardless of whether your phone happens to be nearby. See the walkaway kill switch in detail.
Why this matters against how cars actually get stolen now
US vehicle theft is down substantially from its 2023 peak -- see our full breakdown of the current numbers -- but the thefts that remain lean more on relay attacks, key cloning, and CAN-bus injection than on broken windows, and a lot of them happen overnight in driveways and parking lots while the owner is asleep. All three of those methods work by convincing the car's own electronics that a legitimate key is present. A scheduled kill switch doesn't care what the car's computer thinks it heard -- during the scheduled window, the starter circuit is physically open, independent of any key, phone, or signal.
Frequently asked questions
Can MooveTrax disable my car automatically every night?
Yes. MooveTrax includes a scheduler/timer that can prevent the vehicle from starting during set hours and automatically re-enable it later -- available on the MT3V, KS, and WATER tiers, all of which include the physical kill switch the scheduler controls.
Is the scheduled kill switch the same thing as the walkaway kill switch?
No -- they're two different mechanisms. The scheduler is time-triggered: the car is disabled during hours you set, regardless of where your phone is. The walkaway kill switch, available on the MT3V tier, is proximity-triggered: the car disables itself the moment your paired phone leaves range, any time of day. Many owners use both.
Does the scheduler require me to open an app every night?
No. Once the schedule is set, it runs automatically -- the car disables itself at the start time and re-enables itself at the end time without any action from you.
Can a thief get around the scheduled kill switch by finding and removing the device?
No -- the kill switch the scheduler controls is wired Normally Closed, so removing the device breaks the starter circuit instead of restoring it. See the full explanation of Normally Closed vs. Normally Open wiring.
Which MooveTrax tiers include the scheduled kill switch?
MT3V, KS, and WATER -- the three tiers with a physical kill switch. The $0 Tesla and OEM software-only tiers don't include a kill switch, so there's no starter circuit for a schedule to control.
